How to play Tongits
New to the game, or need a refresher before your first offline hand? Here is how to play Tongits in plain English.
Players and cards
Tongits is played by 3 players with one standard 52-card deck. Each player is dealt 12 cards, except the dealer who gets 13 and plays first. The rest form the stockpile.
The goal
Form your cards into sets and runs, and end the round with the lowest total of unmatched card points, or win outright by going Tongits (emptying your hand).
Card points
Number cards are worth their face value, face cards (J, Q, K) are 10 each, and Aces are 1. Lower is better when the round is scored.
A turn, step by step
Draw one card, either the face-up discard or the top of the stockpile.
Meld if you can. A meld is a set (three or four of the same rank) or a run (three or more cards of the same suit in sequence). Lay melds face-up on the table.
Sapaw if you can, by adding a card to a meld already on the table to score off it.
Discard one card face-up to end your turn.
How a round ends
A round ends when a player goes Tongits by playing every card, when someone calls a fight (a draw challenge) and has the lowest hand, or when the stockpile runs out.
